Panama Butterfly Photos - Blues and Hairstreaks

Here's a selection of Lepidoptera images from a trip to Panama, March 17-April 4, 2004. I managed to photograph about 50 species, though some of the more common ones, such as Blue Morpho and Julia, never perched for a photo. Butterflies were never abundant, but we were there at the end of the dry season. We saw lots of great birds and a few mammals, too. All photos were taken using a Nikon CoolPix 995. Please let me know if you can help with some of the identifications!

Lycaenidae - Blues and Hairstreaks

	Togarna Stripestreak (Arawacus togarna) 3/19/04 - Parque Natural Metropolitano, Panama City, Panama.
	Togarna Stripestreak (Arawacus togarna) 3/23/04 - Canopy Tower, Panama.
	Togarna Stripestreak (Arawacus togarna) 4/2/04 - Cabañas Burbayar, Panama.
	Dusky-blue Groundstreak (Calycopis isobeon) 3/20/04 - Parque Natural Metropolitano, Panama City, Panama. Very similar to the Red-banded Hairstreak (C. cecrops) that we have in North Carolina, but with a narrower red band and a flash of blue above.

3/23/04 - Pipeline Road, Panama. As tame as a Great Purple Hairstreak, this butterfly was a brilliant blue above. This appears to be the only photograph of this species on the web. Thanks to Zsolt Bálint of the Hungarian Natural History Museum for the ID and confirming the other IDs on this page.

	Olynthus narbal 3/23/04 - Pipeline Road, Panama (same individual). This spectacular butterfly allowed for close approach!
	Ceraunus Blue (Hemiargus ceraunus) 3/24/04 - Fort Sherman, Colon.
	Eastern Tailed-Blue (Everes comyntas) 4/2/04 - Cabañas Burbayar, Panama. Quite similar to the version of Eastern Tailed-Blue we have in North Carolina. Note that the tail on this side is worn off.
	Cassius Blue (Leptotes cassius) 3/19/04 - Parque Natural Metropolitano, Panama City, Panama. A pale female.
