Dusky Azure (Celastrina nigra)

Similar to Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon), and formerly lumped with them, these rare butterflies are found in the North Carolina mountains for a few weeks during early spring. This worn female is the latest record for the state.

The upper surface of the hindwing has a broad dark border. Nectaring on wild Geranium.
