Red Buckeye is a deciduous large shrub or small tree common of rich bottomland forests in the Coastal Plain. It is found only in the southern half of the Coastal Plain in North Carolina.

One of the first trees to leaf out in the spring, Red Buckeye produces panicles of red flowers in early April, at about the same time as the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds return.
