Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris)
An uncommonly seen toad of the Coastal Plain of North Carolina, replacing the similar American Toad, which is found in the Piedmont and Mountain regions. A field mark that helps to identify Southern Toad is the two cranial ridges between the eyes, which are a little more prominent than on similar species. They start at the front of the eye and extend to a bit behind the eye, ending with a slight J-shaped hook. Compare with the similar Fowler's Toad. Carteret Co., NC 8/28/05. | |
