We saw one individual this day that was so large and pale, it gave us a first impression that it might be a West Virginia White. Clay Co., NC 5/23/05.
The uppersides of the wings are bright blue. Haywood Co., NC 5/9/08.
Appalachian Azure caterpillars feed on Black Cohosh flowers/flower buds and are tended by ants. The large, brown late instar caterpillars are quite easy to find by closely inspecting the inflorescences. The pale green earlier instars (at right) are much better camouflaged! Another green Appy Azure caterpillar. Buncombe Co., NC 7/8/06.
Four brown caterpillars on one inflorescence! Buncombe Co., NC 7/8/06. |
