Aaron's Skipper (Poanes aaroni)
A rare denizen of coastal marshes. Seen from above, Aaron's is similar to the Palatka Skipper (Euphyes pilatka), which occurs in the same habitat, but is much more common. The butterfly at left can be identified as a female since it has no trace of the male's dark stigma; female Palatka has a large dark blotch in the yellowish area. Female, Dare Co., NC 10/2/05. | |
This seriously out of focus photo of the same individual shows the long pale ray on the underside of the hindwing, which Palatka lacks. Compare with Dion Skipper (Euphyes dion). |
