Yellowroot is a fairly common small subshrub, only one to three feet tall and with one usually unbranched stem, that grows in thickets along shady streamsides.

The pinnately compound deciduous leaves are clustered at the ends of branches.

It is most abundant in the Mountains, least common in the Coastal Plain. Unmistakable — there are no similar local shrubs and this is the only species in the genus.
