Dahurian Buckthorn (Rhamnus davurica)

Dahurian Buckthorn, a native of Asia, is a rare escape from cultivation in North Carolina, though common at the Mason Farm Biological Reserve in Chapel Hill. It can be separated from the native Carolina Buckthorn (Frangula caroliniana) by the presence of scales on the winter buds.

The leaves are very malodorous when crushed.

The numerous flowers are tiny and green.
