This shrub is a very rare escape from cultivation in North Carolina. More commonly seen is the hybrid Osmanthus ×fortunei Carrière (O. fragrans × heterophyllus), which has less deeply toothed leaves. The hybrid is much more frequent in cultivation than O. heterophyllus but rarely escapes.
