Coastal Plain Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis)

This low rhizomatous shrub, generally found in drier areas, is uncommon in the Coastal Plain and rare in the Piedmont of North Carolina.

Also known as Amelanchier stolonifera Wiegand. Compare with Coastal Plain Serviceberry (Amelanchier obovalis), which is also a rhizomatous shrub, but found in wetter areas. There is a difference between the two in the summit of the ovary, which is densely woolly-hairy in A. spicata, sparsely pubescent in A. obovalis.
