Mocha Emerald (Somatochlora linearis)

With emerald green eyes as an adult and a mocha-colored body, this distinctive dragonfly is fairly common in the North Carolina Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Males (as at left) have narrow waists. This male was patrolling a small puddle in a gasline clearing — we never saw it land.

Granville Co., NC 9/10/06.

Female, Durham, NC 6/19/11.

The preferred habitat is woodland streams 1-3 m wide that are drying up (Odonates of NC), which describes exactly the habitat in my backyard where this one was. I also saw a male patrolling the stream.

The wings are tinted with the color of mocha.

Female, Durham, NC 6/19/11.
