White-spotted Slimy Salamander (Plethodon cylindraceus)

Slimy Salamander (Plethodon glutinosus) has been split into several species, which look essentially alike. The salamander at left was identified as a White-spotted Slimy Salamander (Plethodon cylindraceus) by its location in the Piedmont of North Carolina. Replacing it in the Coastal Plain is Atlantic Coast Slimy Salamander (Plethodon chlorobryonis). True to the name, Slimy Salamanders secrete a sticky slime from glands in the skin as a defensive mechanism.
