Three-spotted Skipper (Cymaenes tripunctus)
Three-spotted Skipper is named for the three small translucent spots you can see near the tip of the forewing. In the US, this species is found only in south Florida, though the overall range is from the West Indies to South America. Bahia Honda State Park, Monroe Co., FL 6/26/2010. | |
Three-spotted Skipper is a poor choice of a common name, as you can see if you compare this with the related Fawn-spotted Skipper of southernmost Texas, which also has the same three translucent spots. The hindwing patterns are more distinctive. Tree Tops Park, Davie, Broward Co., FL 6/22/2010. |
