Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus)
Pileated Woodpecker is the largest and least common of the 7 woodpecker species found throughout North Carolina. This nest, with three very cute young'uns, was high in a Loblolly Pine tree. I took digiscoped pictures for an hour, while the parents brought food back to the nest. Adult males (left) have red on the cheek stripe and forehead, which females lack.
